A powerful action by Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. (* 15 January 1929 - † 04 April 1968) was one of the central figures of the black American civil rights movement. In the picture, King leads the protest march, also known as the "Selma to Montgomery March", which took place from 21 to 25 March 1965 despite brutal police countermeasures. The demonstrators campaigned for the right to vote for African Americans and an end to racist violence and segregation. The march with 25,000 people became a symbol of the American civil rights movement and led directly to the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965 and fell victim to a fatal assassination attempt in 1968.

wir laden euch herzlich zur »Radical Rest and Listening Experience« mit Musik von André 3000 ein. Lehnt euch zurück, findet Ruhe und Entspannung und lauscht mit uns den Klängen des neuen André 3000 Albums »New Blue Sun«.

Dieser Event steht ideengeschichtlich in Resonanz mit der aktuellen Rest-is-Resistance Bewegung: „Das kapitalistische System wurde während der Versklavung auf den Plantagen erschaffen und ist dasselbe System, das heute den gesamten Globus in die Erschöpfung und in eine tiefe Abkopplung von Körper und Geist treibt.“ (Tricia Hersey, in »Rest is Resistance«)

Der Begriff „Radical Rest“ ist nicht jedoch neu; er wurde wohl zuerst von Millennials während der großen Rezession geprägt. Damals ermutigten seine Befürworter dazu, sich von der Arbeit zu lösen, indem sie Dinge vorschlugen, wie „das Handy ausschalten“, „Nickerchen machen“ oder „Kochkurse besuchen“. Der Begriff war in Gesundheitsblogs und auf Tumblr ziemlich allgegenwärtig, obwohl er zugunsten des weicher klingenden „Selbstfürsorge“ an Popularität zu verlieren schien - bis zum Jahr 2020, als die Pandemie und die Black-Lives-Matter-Bewegung neue Reaktionen entfachten und eine Rekordzahl von Menschen dazu brachten, zu protestieren und unsere Beziehung zum Kapitalismus zu hinterfragen. Marginalisierte Menschen erkannten, dass das Radikalste, was sie tun konnten, nichts tun war.

André 3000 (* 27. Mai 1975) ist ein US-amerikanischer Rapper und Schauspieler. Er ist Mitglied von OutKast und des Dirty-South-Kollektivs Dungeon Family. Im November 2023 veröffentliche André 3000 sein erstes Soloalbum »New Blue Sun«. Anders als seine Werke als Rapper enthält das Album eine eklektische Mischung aus New Age, Ambient Jazz und Improvisation. Er ist darauf unter anderem auf dem Blaswandler und der Querflöte zu hören. Ein besonderes Merkmal des Instrumentalalbums sind die ungewöhnlich langen und kuriosen Titel der einzelnen Stücke, so z.B. »I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‚Rap‘ Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time«.

We cordially invite you to the »Radical Rest and Listening Experience« with music by André 3000. Lean back, find peace and relaxation and listen with us to the sounds of the new André 3000 album »New Blue Sun«.

This event resonates with the current Rest is Resistance movement in terms of the history of ideas: "The capitalist system was created during plantation enslavement and is the same system that is driving the entire globe into exhaustion and a deep disconnection of body and mind today." (Tricia Hersey, in »Rest is Resistance«)

The term "Radical Rest" is not new, however; it was probably first coined by millennials during the Great Recession. Back then, its proponents encouraged disengagement from work by suggesting things like "turning off your mobile phone", "taking naps" or "taking cooking classes". The term was fairly ubiquitous on health blogs and Tumblr, although it seemed to lose popularity in favour of the softer-sounding 'self-care' - until 2020, when the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement sparked new responses and led record numbers of people to protest and question our relationship with capitalism. Marginalised people realised that the most radical thing they could do was do nothing.

André 3000 (born 27 May 1975) is an American rapper and actor. He is a member of OutKast and the Dirty South collective Dungeon Family. André 3000 released his first solo album »New Blue Sun« in November 2023. Unlike his works as a rapper, the album contains an eclectic mix of new age, ambient jazz and improvisation. He can be heard on the wind transducer and flute, among other instruments. A special feature of the instrumental album are the unusually long and curious titles of the individual tracks, such as "I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time".

wir laden euch herzlich zur Ausstellung »Black Archives Berlin: Schwarzer Aktivismus in Deutschland in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren« und zum Vortrag zum Black Information Center von Phillipp Kabo Koepsell ein.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert entscheidende Momente des Schwarzen Aktivismus der 1960er und 1970er in Berlin und dem Geteilten Deutschland. Gezeigt werden bisher kaum bekannte Flyer, Fotos und Zeitdokumente aus einer wenig erforschten Epoche der Schwarzen Bewegungsgeschichte. Es ist der Versuch, der bekannten Narrative eine tiefere Vorgeschichte zu bieten und weitere Puzzle-Teile zu addieren, in der Hoffnung bald ein komplettes Bild des Schwarzen politischen Handeln zu Gesicht zu bekommen.

We cordially invite you to the exhibition »Black Archives Berlin: Black Activism in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s« and to the lecture on the Black Information Centre by Phillipp Kabo Koepsell.

The exhibition presents decisive moments of Black activism in the 1960s and 1970s in Berlin and divided Germany. On display are hitherto little-known flyers, photos and contemporary documents from a little-researched era of Black movement history. It is an attempt to offer a deeper backstory to the known narrative and to add more puzzle pieces in the hope of soon seeing a complete picture of Black political action.

The exhibition is open to everyone!

wir laden euch herzlich zum »Balafon Workshop« mit Aly Keïta am 08.02.2024 von 13:00-17:00 bei EOTO e.V. ein. Gemeinsam spielen & erkunden wir dieses alte afrikanische Instrument und lassen es in einem modernen Kontext erklingen.

Aly Keïta ist professioneller Musiker und Autodidakt. In diesem Workshop bringt er euch moderne Elemente, Afro-Pop, Funk & Jazz, afrikanische Musik, Rhythmen und Gesänge in seiner besonderen Art näher. Wir wollen gemeinsam das Balafon spielen & erkunden und dieses alte Instrument in einem modernen Kontext erklingen zu lassen. Das Balafon ist ein traditionelles afrikanische Instrument und ähnelt einem Xylophon.

Aly Keïta is a professional musician and autodidact. In this workshop, he will introduce you to modern elements, Afro-pop, funk & jazz, African music, rhythms and songs in his own special way. We want to play and explore the balafon together and let this ancient instrument resound in a modern context. The balafon is a traditional African instrument and is similar to a xylophone.

Der BTF - kurzzeitig trans Siblings Solidarity Fund genannt - ist eine Möglichkeit, Schwarze trans Personen, die in einer finanziell schwierigen Lage sind, akut und konkret zu unterstützen und ebenfalls einen Beitrag zu leisten Schwarze trans Strukturen zu unterstützen. Wir wollen in einem niederschwelligen Verfahren Schwarzen trans Personen in Deutschland so ermöglichen, finanzielle Herausforderungen zu überwinden und den Lebensalltag (finanziell) einfacher zu gestalten. 

Der Zugang zur finanziellen Unterstützung wird durch einen Begleitausschuss entschieden, der größten aus Schwarzen trans* Personen besteht.
Wir rufen im Rahmen des Black OurStory Month dazu auf, Spenden in den tssf einzuzahlen, um somit dazu beizutragen, dass Schwarze trans* Personen in Deutschland ein bisschen weniger Struggle und Herausforderungen im Alltag haben.

Please support the Black Trans+ Fund!

The Black Trans+ Fund (BTF) - briefly called the trans Siblings Solidarity Fund - is a way to provide acute and concrete support to Black trans people who are in a financially difficult situation and also to contribute to supporting Black trans structures. In a low-threshold procedure, we want to enable Black trans people in Germany to overcome financial challenges and make everyday life (financially) easier. 

Access to financial support will be decided by a monitoring committee consisting largely of Black trans* people.
As part of Black OurStory Month, we are calling for donations to be made to the tssf to help Black trans* people in Germany face a little less struggle and challenges in their everyday lives.
