Dear Community,

Please feel welcomed to the participative conversation and breathing session with Tobi Ayé and Lerato Shadi. In this participatory space of inquiry, we will collectively feel and sense what exists, what remains, and what the breath we share with our ancestors carries within us.

We don't have ancestry, WE ARE ANCESTRY and it's called becoming.

We are legacy.
We are History.
History is not in the past, history is here, present and alive.

History can either be static and frozen in time or it can be in movement, in transformation, emergent and becoming.

We have permission to change the history and stories, we have permission to become.

BREATHING WITH THE ANCESTORS is a participative conversation and breathing session with Tobi Ayé and Lerato Shadi. In conversation with their ancestors, ancestry, and histories, Lerato Shadi and Tobi Ayé will explore their Oríkì, Seboko, heritage, trauma, joy, and resources.

In this participatory space of inquiry, we will collectively feel and sense what exists, what remains, and what the breath we share with our ancestors carries within us.

BREATHING WITH THE ANCESTORS . Sunday, 30.07.2023 from 2 pm – 5 pm. Please register via eMail at education@hkw.de.

Lerato Shadi (* Mahikeng, lives and works in Berlin) studied visual art at the University of Johannesburg and earned a M.A. (Spatial Strategies) from Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin in 2018. Her work challenges common assumptions to critique Western notions of history and make visible that which is invisible or overlooked. Working across video, performance and installation, and often employing repetitive processes, she argues the importance of centering – not just including – the marginalised body as a main figure of narrative experience. By placing herself at the forefront of her work, Shadi deals with the politics of cultural erasure and structural exclusion. She states: “It serves to challenge myself, and hopefully my audience as well, in how I/we are complicit in the violence of historical erasure by not fighting for a more inclusive and accurate historical narrative. I realised that – by just blindly or lazily accepting an inaccurate history – I would be sanctioning the problematic dominant narrative with my own inactivity”.
