On Friday, the 17th of July, at 7PM we welcome Dr. Heidi R. Lewis, who will be presenting her book "Make Rappers Rap Again". Join us for an evening of inspiring conversations and discussions spanning from HipHop to gender and beyond...
In _Make Rappers Rap Again: Interrogating the Mumble Rap “Crisis” _(Oxford UP, 2025), Lewis argues Mumble Rap is real Hip Hop. To do so, she examines its congruence with myriad Hip Hop cornerstones, as well as the ways mumble rappers practice citational and collaborative politics congruent with real Hip Hop. She also examines the Mumble Rap sound, arguing it’s much more complicated than it’s often characterized. To explain the subjugation of Mumble Rap, Lewis situates the subgenre as Southern and examines the ways it challenges real Hip Hop masculinity norms. Last, but not least, she argues Hip Hop will never die.
Dr. Heidi R. Lewis is Professor of Feminist & Gender Studies at Colorado College; Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Oxford Bibliographies in Gender & Women's Studies; Series Editor of Expanding Frontiers, a University of Nebraska Press book series focused on Women, Gender, and Sexuality; and Immediate Past President of the National Women's Studies Association.
