Martinique, 1930: Beneath the island’s lush beauty lies a harsh socioeconomic reality. While adults endure grueling labor in the sugarcane fields, the impoverished village of Rue Cases-Nègres belongs to the children—including eleven-year-old orphan José. Realizing that little has changed since the days of slavery, his devoted grandmother, M’an Tine, resolves to secure him an education so he can escape the settlement and a lifetime of unforgiving labor.
In her acclaimed feature debut Sugar Cane Alley, adapted from Joseph Zobel’s novel, writer-director Euzhan Palcy blends lyrical naturalism with sharp social critique.

Mauritanian-French director Med Hondo’s West Indies: The Fugitive Slaves of Liberty is a watershed event for African cinema—the continent’s first musical and a unique blend of historical epic, Broadway revue, Brechtian theater, and agitprop. Built entirely on an enormous mock slave ship soundstage, Hondo uses intricately choreographed dance numbers and reenactments to dissect over three centuries of imperialist oppression.

Traversing time and space from the Middle Passage to 20th-century Europe, the film examines the impact of French colonial policy on the enslaved, the colonized, and their descendants. Far from a simple extravaganza, West Indies stands as a radical call to arms and a spectacular cinematic reimagining of a people's history of resistance.

This masterclass explores the intertwined practices of film programming and archival research through Annabelle Aventurin’s work on the Griot Theatre Company, francophone Caribbean cinema, and the films of Med Hondo. Drawing on her experience as both a programmer and archivist, the lecture reflects on how these two practices have informed and shaped one another: from identifying, classifying, and documenting moving-image archives to preserving, contextualizing, and bringing neglected images and histories back into circulation.
Through rare archival materials, the masterclass revisits the cultural and political legacy of the Griot Theatre Company and the Afro-Caribbean and African artists who worked in 1950s and 1960s France. It considers the archive not simply as a repository of the past, but as a shared moment about research, curation and memory.
